C’est son métier de rêve et il l’exerce depuis 8 ans déjà. A 34 ans, Karma Yonten illustre à merveille le bonheur et l’énergie positive du peuple bhoutanais. Comme il le dit lui-même, il est « trashman » et fier de l’être. Il a créé la toute première entreprise de tri et de recyclage des déchets dans le pays : Greener Way.
Au Pays du « bonheur national brut », la préservation de l’environnement est au cœur de la vie. C’est un des facteurs clés de cet indice unique au monde créé par le petit royaume himalayen. La conservation de l’environnement, dit la bible du GNH (Gross National Happiness) « est considérée comme une contribution essentielle au bonheur parce qu'en plus de fournir des services essentiels tels que l'eau et l'énergie, l'environnement contribue à stimuler l'esthétique et d'autres formes de guérison directement aux personnes qui apprécient les couleurs vives et la lumière, l’air pur et le silence de la nature ».
This is the job of his dreams and he has been doing it for 8 years now. At 34 years old, Karma Yonten is a great example of the happiness and positive energy of Bhutanese people. As he says himself, he is "trashman" and proud of it. He created the very first waste management and recycling company in the country: Greener Way.
In the land of "gross national happiness", the preservation of the environment is in the heart of life. This is one of the key factors of this unique index in the world created by the little Himalayan kingdom. Environmental conservation, says the GNH’s (Gross National Happiness) Bible, "is seen as an essential contribution to happiness because in addition to providing essential services such as water and energy, the environment contributes to stimulate beauties and other forms of healing directly to people who appreciate the bright colors and light, clean air and silence of nature".
Il ne faut pas voyager bien longtemps en Asie pour malheureusement constater les dégâts de la pollution. La gestion des déchets et la conscience populaire sont bien loin de ce que l’on connaît en Europe. Cela dit, découvrir le Bhoutan, c’est s’émerveiller d’une toute autre réalité, le pays fait figure d’oasis en la matière, d’une propreté à faire pâlir les régions himalayennes voisines et les deux géants chinois et indiens à quelques centaines de kilomètres.
Le Bhoutan, très peu peuplé, gérait jusqu’ici essentiellement des déchets organiques faciles à recycler. Mais Karma Yonten s’inquiétait d’un changement majeur : « Aujourd’hui, avec le développement et l’importation grandissante de produits, les déchets plastiques sont de plus en plus nombreux et leur trouver une 2e vie est essentielle », une stratégie bien plus durable et saine que les politiques classiques d’enfouissement des déchets effectuées par le gouvernement. Le recyclage était, il y a peu, inconnu au Bhoutan, Karma Yonten l’a popularisé.
It is not necessary to travel very far in Asia to notice damage of pollution. Waste management and popular awareness are far from what is known in Europe. But discovering Bhutan is just a totally different reality. The country is an oasis compared to the other Himalayan regions and the two Chinese and Indian giants close to Bhutan.
Bhutan, which is not very populated, has been managing mainly organic waste that is easy to recycle. But Karma Yonten was worried about a major change : "Today, with the development and increasing import of products, plastic waste is more and more numerous and finding a second life for them is essential", a strategy more sustainable and healthy than the conventional landfill policies of the government. Recycling was recently, unknown in Bhutan, Karma Yonten popularized it.

Karma nous accueille fièrement dans le nouveau hangar qu’il est en train d’aménager avec ses hommes en gigantesque centre de tri et de recyclage. Une première au Bhoutan. Il est loin le temps où il débutait avec quelques équipements basiques et un minivan. Avec l’aide des autorités et de la fondation Loden qui aide les jeunes à se lancer, Karma a investi et laisser libre cours à ses talents d’entrepreneur vert. Aujourd’hui, son business est florissant, Greener Way travaille dans plusieurs régions du pays et a traité des milliers de tonnes de déchets au Bhoutan.
Karma Yonten est heureux du chemin parcouru, des récompenses comme « le Global Entrepreneurial Award » reçu à Londres en 2015 et fier aussi d’employer plus de 70 personnes. « Je suis sans doute l’homme le plus heureux du Bhoutan » dit-il en se félicitant du travail d’éducation accompli pour son pays : « Je suis tellement heureux d’inspirer d’autres jeunes dans d’autres régions, ils viennent ici, on leur donne des conseils et du soutien pour faire la même chose que moi ! ». Un pouvoir d’inspiration d’autant plus important que le chômage des jeunes (7,3% de chômage chez les jeunes) est un problème grandissant au Bhoutan et que le gouvernement les encourage à créer leur entreprise et leur propre métier.
Karma proudly welcomes us in the new shed that he is developing with his men in a gigantic sorting and recycling center. It's a long time since he has been started with some basic equipment and a minivan. With the help of the authorities and the Loden Foundation helping young people to start their own job, Karma has invested and unleashed his green entrepreneurial skills. Today, his business is flourishing, Greener Way works in many parts of the country and has already handled thousands of tons of waste in Bhutan.
Karma Yonten is happy so far, with awards such as the "Global Entrepreneurial Award" received in London in 2015 and also proud to employ more than 70 people. "I'm probably the happiest man in Bhutan," he said, proud of the educational work done for his country : "I'm so happy to inspire other young people in other regions, they come here, we give them advice and support to do the same thing as me! ". A power of inspiration very important because youth unemployment (7.3% youth unemployment) is a growing problem in Bhutan and the government is encouraging them to start their own business and jobs.
A sa manière Karma Yonten est heureux de contribuer au bonheur national brut si cher aux Bhoutanais. Lui qui a beaucoup voyagé, notamment en Europe, il reste convaincu que le modèle de développement « slow » de son pays est la bonne voie à suivre : « Le GNH est notre philosophie de développement, on veut être sûr que le développement soit respectueux des gens et de la nature. On a beaucoup évolué en 20 ans et notre approche old fashion est la meilleure façon de faire. La révolution industrielle a fait tant de dégâts dans vos pays, nous sommes sur la bonne route et on est convaincu que notre futur est prometteur. »
Vivre de sa passion, gagner sa vie en enrichissant son pays, créer une entreprise qui distribue des « dividendes sociaux » au Bhoutan, c’est le rêve éveillé et inspirant de Karma Yonten !
In his own way, Karma Yonten is happy to contribute to the gross national happiness. He has already travelled a lot, especially in Europe, he remains convinced that the « slow » development model of his country is the right way to follow: "The GNH is our development philosophy, we want to be sure that development is respectful of people and nature. We have changed a lot in 20 years and our old fashion approach is the best way to go. The industrial revolution has done so much damage in your countries, we are on the right way and we are convinced that our future is promising. "
To live with his passion, to earn his life by enriching his country, to create a company that distributes "social dividends" in Bhutan is the awakened and inspiring dream of Karma Yonten !
